50% AI discount to continue for def personnel, cancer patients
The discount on the base fare that Air India (AI) offers to senior citizens and students will be slashed from 50% to 25%. The Tata Group-owned private carrier will, however, continue to extend its 50% discount to other categories of passengers such as those from armed forces, para-military forces, war widows, war disabled officers, general reserve engineering force personnel, Arjuna awardees, civilians who are recipients of gallantry awards, recipients of President’s police medal, blind people, cancer patients and those with locomotor disability.
An AI spokesperson said: “Considering the overall market situation and dynamics, we have decided to rationalise our fares in line with the broad industry trend. Even after this adjustment, Air India’s discounts on base fares for both students and senior citizens will be nearly double when compared to other private airlines.”
The concessionary fare is offered only on base fare on certain categories of its economy class tickets purchased from its ticketing offices, call centre or the airline website. On the airline website, for instance, the option to choose a concessionary fare is offered at stage one of ticket booking.
The latest circular also listed the conditions under which these discounted fares can be availed of. For instance, ‘waitlist and standby’ is not permitted. The ticketing should be completed at least three days before departure. The concessionary fares are subject to availability of seats. Passengers must carry original documents or identity cards to avail the concession.
“Boarding will be denied if the identity proof is not provided at the boarding gate. Passengers would have to carry proof of identification throughout the journey,” it said, adding that as per the chairman and managing director’s instructions, “no one will have authority to waive conditions of documentation check”.
In case the relevant identity card or document isn’t presented at the time of check-in, the base fare will be forfeited and the ticket will become non-refundable, it added.
