An airbag will cost ₹800, won’t raise car price much: Gadkari | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari’s claim in Parliament last week that each car airbag would cost barely Rs 800 negates the argument of a section of carmakers that the mandatory provision of four more airbags would pinch customers.
Gadkari’s claim comes at a time when some manufacturers are lobbying for review of the mandatory provision of six airbags, claiming that the cost of additional airbags will push up car prices.
“I have always maintained that we need to save lives that we lose in road accidents and whether it’s high-end or the most economic model, all cars must have the best inbuilt safety features. I am confident that industry will take necessary measures. The prices will fall considering our huge demand. We should not compromise with human life on some pretext or the other. We should find ways out to reduce cost without compromising with the quality,” Gadkari told TOI.
He had informed Parliament that currently it’s mandatory for all cars to have at least two airbags, for the driver and passenger on the front seat, and the government has proposed four more to secure passengers on the rear seats. He said that the government was presently considering the proposal before issuing a final notification for this new provision.
