Bihar CM Nitish to launch scheme to put Ganga floodwater to use | India News – Times of India

PATNA: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar will Sunday inaugurate the Ganga Water Supply Scheme (GWSS), touted as a novel plan that aims to channel the floodwaters from the state’s river-ravaged north to parched swathes in the south. After the inauguration at Rajgir in Nalanda – the CM’s home district – stored and treated floodwaters sourced from the Ganga will be supplied to households of this ancient town for drinking.
The CM will inaugurate another segment of the scheme on Monday. “The treated Ganga water will also be supplied to hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals and all other institutions in these towns,” water resources minister Sanjay Kumar Jha said, adding the facility will be provided round the year. Rajgir, Gaya and Bodh Gaya are part of the “Buddhist Circuit” that draws thousands of tourists. The plan will be extended to adjoining Nawada next June. The scheme’s novelty lies in the fact that scarcity of drinking water is a perpetual problem in the four towns as water table has gone down even as north Bihar suffers annual floods and wastage of floodwaters, officials said.
