Guntur Medical College bags three super specialty seats in Plastic Surgery wing – Times of India

AMARAVATI: In a major achievement, National Medical Council (NMC) granted three seats in the super specialty wing of plastic surgery department-M Ch-stream to the Government Medical College (GMC), Guntur. The relentless efforts of a team headed by professor, Sumitha Shankar has helped GMC clinch the victory in getting the highest number of seats in the super special wing in one-go. GMC is the only government medical college in the state to have three seats in the plastic surgery department. “This is really a big achievement. We got PG seats in the plastic surgery department for the first-time in the history of GMC,” said principal Dr Padmavathi Devi.
In fact, the GMC got the plastic surgery department about 30 years ago but it was confined to handling a few surgeries. However, the department was completely transformed after Dr Sumitha Shankar assumed charge as associate professor few years ago. Soon after the retirement of professor Markandeyulu, Dr Sumitha took full-additional charge of the department and got it ready for the NMC inspections. Sources said that the NMC team took note of the number of surgeries being handled at the GGH affiliated to the GMC before making a strong case for grant of three PG seats. “We are handling almost 80-90 surgeries per month, the highest in any department. Plastic surgery department is giving a second life to the victims of mishaps,” said Dr Sumitha.
She knocked every possible door in the administrative circles to clear the hurdles before the mandatory inspection by NMC. Government General Hospital (GGH) superintendent Dr N Prabhavati and GMC principal Padmavathi Devi appreciated Dr Sumitha Shankar for her efforts in getting the MCh seats to the prestigious institution. Interestingly, Dr Sumitha Shankar was elevated as professor of the department only two days ago. The newly granted seats will be filled through national level counseling under Neet to be held in September.
