Addressing an Independence Day gathering at the S K Stadium in Srinagar’s Sonwar, Sinha alluded to Pakistan and said all efforts by the “neighbouring country” to destabilise peace were being dealt with professionally by security forces “working day in and out” to cement peace.
“Of 365 days a year, 100 days would see hartals that took a toll on business and education. That’s history now, just like stone-pelting on roads,” he said. Citing examples from everyday life, the LG said there were unmistakable signs all around of J&K heading towards an era of peace and prosperity. “Bazaars remain open till night and transport functions normally till the late hours. There is no fear, and the common man is feeling a sense of relief.”
All “nefarious designs and the propaganda” to misguide the youth are being given a befitting reply by the administration, Sinha said.
The LG urged citizens to pay tributes to freedom fighters and martyrs to realise the dream of a peaceful, progressive and prosperous Jammu Kashmir. He announced a Gaurav Stambh — a martyrs’ column — in Srinagar.
“The Gaurav Stambh shall be established in memory of the brave soldiers who have sacrificed their lives defending our beloved motherland. I have full faith that the immortal flame of Gaurav Stambh and the museum of our brave hearts will be the centre of inspiration for the new generation,” the LG said.
Flagging the response to the Centre’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign as a denominator of change, Sinha said J&K topped the list in terms of “enthusiasm” to unfurl the Tricolour in the run-up to Independence Day. “The youth were at the forefront of this campaign.”
He appealed to the youth to decide “where they want to see J&K after 25 years”. “They have a great responsibility to shape the future of J&K,” the LG said. “They have big dreams and are treading the path that can help convert their dreams into reality.”
The LG reeled off a list of projects executed by the administration and stressed that peace was a must to ensure all-round development. “The administration is committed to take the Union Territory to new heights and restore the glory for which it was once known. J&K was, and will remain, the crown of India,” he declared.
