In an email reply to TOI on Thursday, the IOC’s press department informed: “We are fully aware of the various court decisions. The IOC Executive Board will be updated about the situation on the occasion of its next meeting from 7 to 9 September 2022.” The IOC reiterated its demand for IOA to convene a meeting of its Executive Council (EC), followed by an extraordinary/special meeting of the General Assembly, to confirm the date of elections without any further delay.
The IOC had, in July, threatened the Olympic body with suspension for outside interference and court battles, while flagging the issue of autonomy and violation of the Olympic charter. A three-member delegation, comprising of IOA’s acting president Anil Khanna, secretary general Rajeev Mehta and treasurer Anandeshwar Panday, will be in Lausanne on September 1-2 to work out a roadmap for the IOA and discuss the implications of court orders on the functioning of the Olympic body.
IOA could have avoided the mess it finds itself in after the appointment of the three-member CoA had it incorporated the amendments as suggested by the Delhi high court in December 2021 in its functioning to make its constitution compliant to the national sports code.
The two-judge bench of the high court had suggested 13 amendments to IOA’s constitution, including the restrictive clause for president and secretary general’s post, age and tenure rule applicable to all the members of the EC, not allowing voting rights to the state Olympic associations and extending ban on charge-sheeted persons for crimes punishable for more than two years from contesting elections to all IOA’s posts.
While the group led by Khanna, Mehta and Panday pushed for the General Assembly (House) to be called where they enjoyed the majority, the other faction, led by former IOA chief Narinder Batra, Lalit Bhanot and R K Anand, insisted on the EC meeting where they had greater number of support.
