NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone of the much awaited Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar in the presence of Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
Here is all you want to know about the airport:
* 2nd airport in Delhi-NCR: The Jewar airport will be the second international airport to come up in Delhi-NCR and will help decongest the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the national capital.
* 4th largest in world: According to the UP government, once completed, the Jewar airport will be the fourth largest airport in the world.
* Net-zero emission: The airport will be the country’s ‘first net zero emissions airport’.
* Five international airports: Once the Jewar is complete, UP will be the only state in India to have 5 international airports. Jewar, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kushinagar and Ayodhya – set to be operational next year – will be 5 international airports in UP.
* Four phases: The Noida International Airport will be completed in four phases and the work on the first phase is scheduled to be completed in 36 months.
* Rs 10,050 crore: The development of the first phase of the airport is being done at a cost of over Rs 10,050 crore.
* Rs 29,560 crore: The total cost of the airport project is estimated at Rs 29,560 crore. The amount excludes the money to be spent by the Uttar Pradesh government towards R&R and land acquisition. The Uttar Pradesh government is spending Rs 4,326 crore on the acquisition of land and rehabilitation and resettlement
* Capacity of 1.2 crore: In the first phase, the airport will have a handling capacity of 1.2 crore passengers per annum.
* 7 crore: Once completed, the airport will be able to handle 7 crore passengers annually.
* 21 minutes: It will be linked to the planned Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail, enabling people to complete the journey between Delhi and the airport in only 21 minutes.
* Built and operated by: It will be built and operated by Switzerland-based Zurich Airport International AG.
* 12 million passengers after first phase: In the first phase, scheduled to be completed by 2024, the airport will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers per annum.
