The 31-year-old was named in Norway’s squad for the tournament. Others in the team include Grandmasters Jon Ludvig Hammer, Aryan Tari, Frode Urkedal and Johan-Sebastian Christiansen.
Magnus had made his debut at the Olympiad back in 2004 and had scored 3 out 5 points in that tournament. Since then, Magnus has often been part of the Norway teams that have played at the high-profile tournament.
In a chat with TOI last month, Magnus had commended the work done by the AICF to host a tournament after FIDE moved it out of Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February this year. “I think the fact that India, and Tamil Nadu in particular, is hosting the tournament at such short notice shows the ambition the country has and the respect they have for the sport. It’s almost been 9 years since I visited Chennai as I haven’t been there since the 2013 World championship win,” he had said.
Magnus also remarked that playing in tournaments such as the Olympiad gave him a lot of satisfaction. “Featuring in tournaments like the Norway chess, the Olympiad make me happier than being part of the World championships,” he stated.
The All-India Chess Federation (AICF) is understandably excited about welcoming the World no. 1 to the event. “He is one of the biggest names in the sport and it will be our pleasure to have him playing in our tournament. Also, having Magnus definitely serves as a motivation for other players and teams in the competition,” a AICF official mentioned.
