OnePlus CEO teases company’s first foldable device, this is how its design will be – Times of India

OnePlus is working on a foldable device, most probably a smartphone, CEO Pete Lau has teased via a Twitter post where he showed the metal hinge of the body of the device. The OnePlus CEO shared two images with his post, and going by them, we can assume that the foldable device won’t have a clamshell design and might open up like a small notebook does.

The rumours about OnePlus working on a foldable device have been there for quite some time and the CEO’s post has just confirmed it. Now, foldable phones, ever since they arrived for the first time in the market, have been brought as premium products which the budget conscious user will shy away from. Initially, Samsung and Huawei emerged as the leaders with their foldable products and soon other brands like Xiaomi, Honor, Microsoft and Oppo also launched their foldable devices. However, only Samsung’s foldable smartphones are for the mainstream market. Others have limited availability.
OnePlus could actually change the game by bringing in an ‘affordable’ foldable flagship device, something the likes of which is missing from the current foldable device market. It is a high possibility. The company can build on what Oppo has done with the Find N and its pricing strategy could land it profits with its foldable device. Now that the CEO has teased about the device himself, we expect to see more of the design and detail about the foldable device soon.
Samsung and Xiaomi’s new foldable phone
Samsung recently launched two new foldable phones in the market–the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip4. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 features a 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display with a 2316 x 904 pixels resolution and adaptive refresh rates of 48Hz and 120Hz. When you unfold the device, there’s a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive refresh rate support between 1Hz and 120Hz. Under the hood, the smartphone comes with Qualcomm’s latest chipset — Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 paired with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 1TB storage.
Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is also powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. The device features a 1.9-inch cover display which is a Super AMOLED panel. The handset unfolds to reveal the 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with 2640 x 1080 pixels resolution and 22:9 display. It’s a 120Hz refresh rate panel and supports an adaptive refresh rate that enables the smartphone to automatically adjust the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz based on the content being viewed. The display has 900 nits of peak brightness.
Xiaomi recently launched Mi Mix Fold 2. This second foldable phone from the company after Mi Mix Fold that launched in 2021. Mi Mix Fold didn’t get a global launch and is limited to the company’s home market, China. It remains to be seen if the company will follow the same strategy for Mi Mix Fold 2 or not.
