Philips Wiz smart lights can detect motion without additional hardware – Times of India

Motion sensor smart light setup is something that makes a smart home setup easier to execute. But figuring out the right place for the motion sensor is itself a tricky task and figuring out the right place can be a tedious job. It seems that Signify, the company owns the Philips Hue, Wiz and other smart light brands has introduced a new feature for its Wiz smart lights called SpaceSense as a part of Wiz v2 app update. The new technology converts the Wiz smart lights into motion sensor lights without the need of any additional hardware.
For those unintended, the Wiz lineup is the company’s Wi-Fi smart lighting, while the Philips Hue is Zigbee-based smart lights and both the lights work with different apps. The former requires users to download the Wiz app while the latter is compatible with the Hue app. The SpaceSense feature is for the Wiz smart lights.
What is the SpaceSense feature and how it works
SpaceSense is a software feature that will arrive on the Wiz app. The feature will be added via a new Wiz app update later this month. The SpaceSense feature brings motion sensor features to all the compatible Wiz smart lights including ceiling bulbs, smart bulbs, etc.
The SpaceSense technology uses Wi-Fi signal strength to detect motion in the surrounding and use it to turn On or Off the lights. It detects the change in signal strength due to movement in the room and uses it to detect the motion. As soon as it detects the motion, it will automatically turn on the lights and turn it off when there’s no motion in the room. All this happens right from the Wiz app and there’s no need to install additional hardware for it.
The feature, according to the company, will require users to install two or more Wiz lights in a room.
According to the company, the Wiz SpaceSense feature will be an opt-in feature and users are free to choose whether they want to use it or not. Also, it will also let users adjust the sensitivity for the SpaceSense feature.
Wiz v2.0 app: What’s new
The Wiz v2.0 app update is scheduled to roll out later this month. In addition to the new SpaceSense feature, the app update will also include user interface revamp along with some new features like Quick Actions and more.
