‘Surge in Covid cases likely to continue for another 4-6 weeks’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The present surge in Covid-19 cases is estimated to stick around for another four to six weeks before it settles around end of February, official sources said underlining a possibility of “fluctuation in positive cases” in the wake of upcoming “social events”, including festivals, marriage season and elections.
However, Omicron-powered cases are also expected to decline faster than those infected with Delta, officials said. “Though Omicron variant entered through the main city centres but the upsurge has occurred simultaneously in most parts of the country. Once the variant entered the country, cases started spreading rapidly almost across the coun- try simultaneously since mid-December. Practically, now most of states in the country have over 90% of isolates infected with Omicron,” a senior official said.
“There is a difference in the wave form of Delta versus Omicron and therefore, there is likely to be a difference in the way it will subside. While Delta took six months to decline, Omicron variant is likely to subside much faster,” he added.
A total of 2. 51 lakh fresh cases were detected on Thursday. The total active caseload stands at 21. 05 lakh.
