5G rollout boosts demand for talent with niche skills – Times of India

CHENNAI: As India enters the 5G race, there are a flood of new job opportunities in the space with open roles almost doubling in the last few quarters. In addition to the telecom and mobility sector hiring for 5G tech skills, semiconductor majors, technology giants, startups and automotive sector too are joining the talent war.
Technologists such as Radio Frequency (RF) systems architect and engineers, AI/ML developers, 5G ORAN (Open Radio Access Network) architecture specialists and user experience design and testing talent, are in demand. While telcos are tapping the India teams of MNCs that have already worked on developing 5G solutions globally, headhunters say those in the telecom sector with Augmented Reality and IoT (Internet of Things) background are also in top demand for 5G roles.
Anshul Lodha, head of Page Executive, India, says the firm has seen over 100% increase in hiring mandates in 5G tech this year as compared to last year. “5G will need engineers with multiple skill sets, those with talents across devices, open source architecture, and familiarity with IoT. Work has also begun on 6G research,” he said. Pay scales range from Rs 70 lakh going up to Rs Four crore at the mid-senior and senior executive levels, he notes.
The application of 5G across sectors will also create jobs, according to Sachin Alug, CEO of staffing firm NLB Services. “5G will present multiple use cases for sectors such as agriculture, retail, financial services, energy & utilities, and more, affecting the workforce needs in the next few years. We expect a 20% growth in demand for talent from these specific areas over the next two quarters,” he said.
TOI’s review of job openings on various portals showed that besides the telco trio of Reliance Jio, Vodafone and Airtel, Nokia, Ericsson, Cisco, Apple, and Tech Mahindra, are a few top hirers for 5G talent. Jobs portal Indeed notes a 16% increase in postings for roles such as ‘Telecommunications engineer’ in just a month’s time period. “The job postings for 5G and telecom jobs have increased by 33.7% between September 2021 to September 2022 on Indeed platform,” Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales, Indeed India, said.
A spokesperson for Nokia said that the company’s R&D centre at Bengaluru is hiring 5G skills such as research, simulation and standardization for its teams, and they have also been upskilling existing staff for 5G in the last two years.
On its part, the Telecom Sector Skill Council is teaming up with government, academic, and others to upskill the country’s technical talent. “For an estimate, in FY2021–2022 around 36,000+ competent workers were needed in India for 5G and allied technologies. Due to the increased use of internet services, the demand for better telecom networks, and currently the implementation of 5G network, this gap will only widen,” Arvind Bali, CEO, Telecom Sector Skill Council, said.
“People possessing niche 5G skills at this point of time are like a rare diamond, they will have a say in the pay package, but it comes with the ability to take on new 5G use cases and projects to greater heights,” Aditya Narayan Mishra, MD and CEO of CIEL HR Services, said. The firm is currently seeing increased mandates from the telecom sector but says demand from technology companies and startups will follow soon.
