Filmmaker K Asif initially started work on the film that was titled ‘Anarkali’ in 1944. In 1946, one of his lead actors, Chandramohan (who was to play Akhbar) passed away due to a heart attack. The film was left incomplete but in 1951, with Shapoorji Pallonji as the producers, the venture was revived as ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. After restoration, the historical drama was re-released on November 12 2004, in colour with six track Dolby Digital sound.
