NEW DELHI: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has left for the US early – almost a month before her scheduled departure for Kansas City – due to her lower back injury flaring up again.
According to an Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) official, Mirabai left from Delhi for Kansas via New York on Wednesday night, along with chief national coach Vijay Sharma and physiotherapist Akrant Saxena, for her training and rehabilitation programme.
She will be based out of St Louis city and will practice at the local LAB gym, which will be her training base for the next two months.
Mirabai had headed to her hometown in Imphal, Manipur last month on a family vacation and returned to join the weightlifting national camp at the NIS Patiala in the fourth week. Her quarantine period ended on Monday.
According to sources, it was during her stay at home that Mirabai again experienced back trouble while practising locally.
