Apple device users, the company has released important updates for you. Three of Apple’s biggest products — iPhones, MacBooks and iPads have received the latest software which plugs in a security hole that may have been exploited by hackers. Apple has released macOS Big Sur 11.5.1, iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1 and says that the update is recommended for all users. So if you own either of the three Apple devices, you should update them to the latest security patch.
In the release notes for macOS, Apple says that an application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Stating that it is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited, Apple recommends the update for MacBook users.
The release notes for iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1 also indicate that the updates bring a fix for the same bug. Apple has addressed the issue with improved memory handling. In addition, the iOS 14.7.1 update also fixes a bug that may have prevented iPhones with Touch ID from unlocking an Apple Watch.
iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1 updates are available for iPhone 6s and later iPhones, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation).
How to install these new security updates
To install the latest mac update, one can head to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update. The update can also be downloaded from the App Store.
For iPhones and iPads, users can head to the Settings apps and go to General > Software Update. Alternatively, they can connect to a Mac or PC running iTunes.
