Apple: This feature is not coming to Apple Watch anytime soon – Times of India

Apple has been working on including a blood glucose monitoring feature in Apple Watch for a while. However, a new online report suggests that the feature is not going to come to the wearable anytime soon.
As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it will take a while for Apple to add blood glucose monitoring features to Apple Watch. “Apple still needs to perfect the algorithms and on-board sensors” to bring the technology to market. Crucially, the company also needs to “shrink it down to the size of a module that can fit in the small and thin package that is an Apple Watch.” Gurman believes this process “will take another three to seven years at least,” said Gurman.
Apple started working on alternative glucose monitoring methods in 2010 with the acquisition of startup RareLight. The Cupertino-based tech giant then used another startup Avolonte Health LLC to develop the technology at a secret facility before moving it to Exploratory Design Group.
It is reported that Apple has been conducting human trials for the past 10 years. The company aims to warn the Apple Watch users if they are prediabetic before they develop diabetes.
Meanwhile, a recent report by Canalys revealed that Apple continues to lead and dominate the smartwatch market worldwide. On the other hand, Google attained the second position by beating Samsung. Apple’s shipments declined 17% yet it remained the market leader with a 27.5% market share. Google’s Pixel Watch helped it to rise to second place with an 8% market share. Samsung suffered the biggest decline — as much as 35% — and it slipped to the fifth spot in the market.
As per Canalys, it was a “challenging” Q4 for the wearables market as shipments declined 18% and clocked 50 million units. “This marks the first double-digit decline for the market in a typically seasonally strong Q4 quarter,” noted the report by Canalys.
