Apple’s upcoming AR/MR headset could be the device that starts a new trend in the tech industry as it would be the first of such devices to come from the tech giant and depending upon its reception, may be renewed for another iteration, which may also create a domino effect among the rivals. Apple is expected to unveil the headset in January 2023, reliable tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed in his latest research note.
According to a report by The Elec, Apple will use LG’s OLED display technology in its mixed reality headset. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are working on OLED on silicon (OLEDoS), and LED on silicon (LEDoS) technologies (where oS stands for on Silicon), the first of which will be used by Apple for its headset, with LG being the supplier, claims the report.
Now, according to The Elec, there are a few benefits the OLEDoS display packs in, like “fast response time” and “thin and light manufacturing capability” which may help Apple in producing a headset that feels light on wearing. A lightweight design is something that should be very high on the potential customer’s priority when going for a mixed reality headset and if Apple is to charm its way in its fan base, a bulky and heavy headset is a strict no-no.
As per an earlier report by The Elec, OLEDoS microdisplays are also fabricated on silicon wafers instead of glass substrates and polyimide (PI) substrates. That they have not been commercialised so far could be due to the fact that there is not enough OLED deposition technology to manufacture high-resolution OLEDoS displays suitable for an AR device.
The report mentioned a prototype of 3000ppi but also adds that commercialising it will take a lot of time. To make high-resolution OLEDoS on a commercial scale, “a precise pixel-forming technology of several micrometers for OLED deposition is required.” and for mass production of such displays, yield and process consistency issues should be considered, adds the report.
