Congress releases list of 8 candidates for Haryana | India News – Times of India

CHANDIGARH: Finally, the Congress party on Thursday released the much-awaited list of its eight candidates from Haryana for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. As per the list declared on Thursday late evening, former union minister and four times MP, Kumari Selja would contest from Sirsa (reserved) seat, Congress party’s only Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana Deepender Singh Hooda has been nominated from Rohtak, former minister Mahender Pratap Singh from Faridabad, party MLA from Mulana, Varun Chaudhary from Ambala (reserved), former MP Jai Prakash from Hisar, Satpal Brahamchari from Sonepat, Rao Dan Singh from Bhiwani Mahendergarh and youth congress leader and former state president of National Student Union of India (NSUI) Congress party’s student wing, Divyanshu Budhiraja has been fielded from Karnal, where former Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar has been contesting as BJP nominee. The party, however, is yet to take a decision on Gurgaon seat. In Haryana, congress has been contesting on nine seats and its alliance partner Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been contesting on one seat in Kurukshetra. However, the party’s decision not to field sitting MP Brijendra Singh has come as a surprise, as Brijendra had escalated the political temperature of the state by switching his loyalties to Congress party. He was the first sitting MP who had left BJP and joined Congress at a time when several political leaders were making a beeline to join saffron outfit. Party has also not fielded former Haryana CM Bansi Lal’s granddaughter, Shruti Chaudhary this time from Bhiwani-Mahendergarh seat considering the facts that she had lost 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls with a huge margin. Party had already indicated to her mother and Tosham MLA Kiran Chaudhary about the possibility of not nominating Shruti this time.
Name of Divyanshu Budhiraja from Karnala has also come as a surprise, as he was active in youth congress activities. He had come into limelight for the first time in January 2018, when he was arrested by Panchkula police for showing black flags to the then CM Manohar Lal Khattar as a mark of protest in Panchkula. He was very active in party activities since then and has been considered close to former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s camp. Party’s Bhiwani-Mahendergarh candidate Rao Dan Singh and Sonepat nominee Satpal Brahamchari are also considered close to Hooda. Brahamchari, 57, had unsuccessfully contested from Haridwar in the 2022 state assembly elections in Uttrakhand.
