Delhi reported the highest deaths from Covid-19 among states this week with 203 fatalities, a four-fold increase from last week’s toll of 51, even as deaths across the country registered an 83% increase during the period.
Cumulative cases in India during the week (January 1016) more than doubled compared to the previous seven days’ tally as the third wave of the pandemic continued to surge but at a slower pace than in the last couple of weeks.
India reported more than 16. 7 lakh new cases in the current week, the highest in 34 weeks since May 17-23, 2021.
Last week, the country had logged 7. 84 lakh cases. The rate of rise in cases slowed to 113%, from 506% last week and 181% in the week before, as a few states reported signs of infections slowing down. Testing also slowed in the second half of the week.
India recorded 1,394 fresh deaths from the virus in the current week, up from 761 in the previous seven days. These numbers do not include deaths from earlier periods being reported now. Including these old deaths, the weekly toll stood at 2,468, up from 2,039 in the preceding seven days.
After Delhi, Bengal had the second highest toll of 187, followed by Maharashtra (169), Tamil Nadu (134) Kerala (127) and Punjab (88). Punjab, which has the highest overall Covid death rate in the country of 2.5%, saw a sharp increase in fatalities in the latter half of the week, with casualties in the last three days accounting for 57 deaths.
Bihar registered the sharpest rise in deaths, with the toll up from five in the previous week to 34, a sevenfold increase. Other states that saw fatalities increase by at least three times the toll in the previous week included Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
Overall, however, deaths so far in the third wave have remained far lower than at the corresponding stage of cases in the second wave. When active cases had risen to16 lakh in the second wave — roughly the number at present — India was reporting1,300-1,400 daily deaths.
While Maharashtra continued to report the highest number of weekly cases at 2.88 lakh, the state’s tally had increased by a relatively mod- est 30%. Karnataka reported the second highest case count of 1.68 lakh, registering a sharp four-fold increase from the previous week’s tally. Delhi recorded 1.6 lakh new cases, a rise of 68% from the previous week. Andhra Pradesh logged the sharpest rise, with infections increasing 5.5-fold to 24,421.
