One or more videos leaked online
It is not certainly known how many videos made it to social media, but at least one leaked video — featuring the accused woman — was shot in the bathroom of the girls’ hostel.
Protests on campus
With videos doing the rounds on social media, massive protests erupted at the private varsity, triggering strong responses from National Commission for Women (NCW), Punjab CM and the police chief. The protesters were heard shouting slogans of “We want justice.”
NCW chief Rekha Sharma has written to Punjab director general of police urging to take stringent action against the culprits.
Woman student and friend arrested
A woman student, allegedly made videos of some fellow hosteller women students taking baths and shared the same with her friend – who is accused of uploading the footage on social media. The woman student is suspected of sharing the videos with a man in Shimla. She and her friend have been apprehended in connection with the case so far.
FIR lodged, probe ordered
An FIRhas been registered in the case, said the police, which denied reports that eight hosteller women attempted suicide — as some claimed on social media. The police said one student was taken to hospital as she “is suffering from anxiety”. The police also denied that objectionable videos of 60 students were leaked to the Internet.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann ordered a high level inquiry into the incident. “Our daughters are our pride. Will take strict action against the guilty”, he said.
Cybercrimes against women
Cybercrime has gone up by 18.4% (2021) since 2019; in the case of women, the rise is steeper at 28%, as per National Crime Records Bureau data.
Cybercrimes against women primarily include instances of cyber blackmail, threatening, cyber pornography, posting/ publishing of obscene sexual materials, cyber stalking, bullying, defamation, morphing, and creation of fake profiles.
