Farmers’ groups agitating against the new agriculture laws have upped the ante ahead of their discussions with the Centre on Thursday, calling for a special session of Parliament to repeal the laws — a demand central to the stir. Farmers’ representatives, who had met Union ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Piyush Goyal on Tuesday, called for an intensification of protests from Saturday even as the Centre offered to “address concerns” through discussions. However, the demand for a special Parliament session has deepened the deadlock, further shrinking the middle ground between the two sides. Thursday’s meeting may see some options (see graphics) to assure the farmers, though repealing the laws or legislating an assurance that no sale below minimum support price (MSP) will be allowed are ruled out. Farm groups under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha coordination committee held marathon meetings on Wednesday to prepare a detailed note for Thursday’s huddle, flagging six points in their letter to Tomar. The unions are clear they won’t agree to any compromise on MSP of crops and complete purchase of grains by state procurement agencies.
