Fill MBBS seats under Puducherry quota in Jipmer based on Puducherry government’s list: HC tells MCC – Times of India

PUDUCHERRY: The Madras high court on Wednesday directed the Medical counselling committee (MCC) of the Union health and family welfare ministry to proceed with the counselling to fill up MBBS seats under Puducherry quota in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) only based on the list submitted by the director (health and family welfare services) cum nodal officer of medical education, Puducherry.

Madras high court judge justice N Anand Venkatesh passed a direction in this regard while hearing a petition filed by 10 candidates from Puducherry and posted the case to November 30 for further hearing.

The candidates moved the high court after widespread allegations of irregularities from various quarters on the admission of candidates to MBBS course under Puducherry quota in Jipmer.

“Taking into consideration the facts and circumstances of the case and in order to safeguard the interests of those candidates who come within the category of Puducherry quota, there shall be a direction to the second respondent (MCC) to proceed further with the counselling to fill up the Puducherry quota only based on the list submitted by the fourth respondent (director of department of health and family welfare services cum nodal officer, Puducherry),” said the justice.

Various students’ and parents’ forums have charged that 31 candidates from other states (seven from Andhra Pradesh, five each from Telangana and Rajasthan, four from Bihar, two each from Kerala, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, one each from Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat) have been invited for counselling for MBBS admission under Puducherry quota in Jipmer.

Earlier, the Puducherry revenue department directed Jipmer dean Pankaj Kundra to furnish the copies of the certificates of all the provisionally selected candidates under Puducherry quota for MBBS course for the academic year 2020-21 for verification of the genuineness of the documents before admitting the candidates.

Lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi too had earlier directed Jipmer director Rakesh Aggarwal not to finalize the MBBS admissions before verifying the genuineness of the documents submitted by the candidates.

AIADMK legislature party leader A Anbalagan urged the Puducherry administration to refer an inquiry by the CBI to unearth the irregularities in the admission process and to expose the people involved in the malpractice and punish them.
