MEERUT: The family of a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly gangraped before being murdered in UP’s Bulandshahr has alleged that police forced them to cremate the minor before they could even arrange for her last rites.
The incident, which led to massive protests on Tuesday, has brought back shocking memories of the Hathras case in 2020 that triggered nation-wide furore after a 19-year-old Dalit girl who had allegedly been violated and killed was hurriedly cremated despite protestations by the bereaved family.
“What is most shocking is that the incident had happened on January 21 but the family kept quiet after police threatened them. It was only when word spread and politicians tweeted about it that the incident came out in the open,” one of the villagers said. RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad also tweeted about the case.
The girl’s father said a few cops “forced us to cremate her in the night without giving us an opportunity to conduct proper rituals”. An FIR has been lodged under the IPC and Pocso Act. Two out of the four accused have been arrested so far.
The victim’s father, an OBC, said his daughter was friends with an upper-caste boy. The boy allegedly came to the girl’s village and asked her to come with him for an outing. She agreed and sat on his bike. “Later, I got a call from police saying my daughter’s body was lying near a tube well on the outskirts of the village. I rushed to the spot but by the time I reached, they had taken her body to the postmortem house. We were given the body after almost 24 hours and were forced to cremate her immediately,” he said.
SSP of Bulandshahr Santosh Singh said cops “never forced the family to cremate the girl” and that the matter was being “politicised.”
