AndroidPolice has reported that Google is testing a new tab strip for some Chrome users on the stable Chrome 112. According to the report, there won’t be any new updates for the change to appear on tablets and foldables. This is a server-side update and will be available to users gradually.
Chrome gets a new tab strip on tablets and foldables
As per the report, the new tab strip on Chrome replaces the file cabinet design. The new design just highlights the active tab with a light blue colour background from the address bar, while other tabs are separated by a light white line. Also, the tabs keep shrinking to an extent and after a certain number of tabs, it becomes scrollable.
Compared to the desktop version of Chrome, the tablet and foldable version looks more modern and Google is also expected to provide the same design treatment to the desktop version of the Chrome with future updates to put the design of the desktop and tablet versions in line with each other.
Android Police also found the flag that controls the redesign. The report mentions that chrome://flags/#enable-tab-strip-redesign is the flag that brings the change to the tablet user interface of the Chrome browser. Users could use the flag to toggle on or off the new strip design of Chrome on their tablets or foldable smartphones.
All users need to do is visit the flag, enable it and relaunch the browser.
