Google has announced that classic Hangouts will be shut down for free users this November and the chats migrated to Chat, the ‘upgraded Hangouts of the future’, so to speak. As Gmail users know, it is not a surprise announcement and the tech giant has kept on sending reminders regarding the migration of the chats for quite some time. Only this time, it has revealed the month it is going to retire the classic Hangouts. The Google Enterprise customers have already been made to switch to Chat.
The free, personal accounts that are still using the old Hangouts on Android and iOS, will soon start seeing an upgrade screen that will prompt them to switch to Chat in the Gmail app or the mobile Chat clients on the platforms.
“First, starting today, people using Hangouts on mobile will see an in-app screen asking them to move to Chat in Gmail or the Chat app. Similarly, people who use the Hangouts Chrome extension will be asked to move to Chat on the web or install the Chat web app. In July, people who use Hangouts in Gmail on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail.”, said Google in a blog post.
The tech giant also advised users who wish to keep a copy of their Hangouts data to use Google Takeout to download it.
Google has added the option to edit Docs, Slides or Sheets with side-by-side editing in Chat. Google Chat also comes with Spaces, a place dedicated to a certain topic. With the new integrated view in Gmail, Chat can be used alongside Inbox, Meet and Spaces. Google also said that it will add new features to Chat like direct calling, in-line threading in Spaces and the ability to share and view multiple images in the coming months.
