When someone mentions adoption, one automatically thinks of children. So when a social media advertisement “seeking to adopt parents” went viral over the past month, it grabbed attention. Put forth by Dilip Amlani, a 55-year-old pathologist who hails from Jamnagar, the advertisement has led to 800 elderly citizens being part of a caring community that enables them to lead a dignified life. For Amlani, who shunts between Jamnagar and Mumbai where he has three hospitals, this initiative was just an expansion of what he has been doing for some years now. Thanks to his efforts, around 2,000 senior citizens have found shelter in various old-age homes in Gujarat. He has also set up a centre that accommodates nearly 100 elderly couples in Kandivali, Mumbai.
