In an interview with The Guardian, Biz Stone said that running a social media company is “not really a win-win situation … it’s always tough”, because “50% of the people are gonna be happy, 50% of people are gonna be upset with you”. Stone also said that Musk doesn’t seem like the right person to lead right now, “but I could be wrong.”
Musk reversed improvements in content policies
Stone co-founded Twitter in 2006 with Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass and Evan Williams. He returned to the company in 2017 when Dorsey was the CEO to “guide the company culture, that energy, that feeling”.
Stone mentioned that, with his decisions, Musk has reversed the improvements to morale and content policies at the company. “We made a lot of improvements in those areas. And that’s all gone now.”
Twitter Files led to ‘harassment’
While talking about Twitter Files, a series of internal documents that ‘exposed’ the decisions, such as banning the account of then US President Donald Trump, taken by Twitter executives . “When that happens, people get a lot of harassment. It’s really bad,” he pointed out.
While talking about Twitter’s existence, Stone said he doesn’t know whether the platform would survive forever but “the idea of Twitter will be around.” He pointed to the success of Mastodon, a Germany-based social media platform, that saw an influx of users after Musk’s Twitter takeover.
“It would only matter that Twitter the idea continued. And that’s happened. That seems to be happening already. Mastodon seems to be winning the open-source, decentralised version of Twitter. People seem to be going there,” Stone said.
