“Changed my name to Mr Tweet, now Twitter won’t let me change it back,” he tweeted.
This is probably due to a rule change according to which, users who were verified under Twitter’s legacy policy won’t be able to change their display names on the app. The rule was aimed at preventing impersonation after Twitter’s paid verification rollout was followed by impersonations of various brands and public figures.
But people on the platform wondered why he did that. As per a report by Business Insider, Musk updated his name following a reference used by a lawyer during a trial over the billionaire’s 2018 tweets on Tesla funding.
Nicholas Porritt, an attorney representing a group of shareholders who are suing Musk over his 2018 tweets, accidentally called Musk “Mr Tweet” during the trial earlier this week. While the lawyer dubbed his mistake a “Freudian slip,” Musk joked it was “probably an accurate description.”
Musk is ‘popular’ on Twitter
There is no denying that Musk is extremely popular on Twitter. He has been tweeting a lot and his tweets are viewed by millions of people (thanks to the view count feature). In fact, Mr Tweet himself boasted about his popularity during Tesla’s quarterly earnings call.
“Let me check my Twitter account. OK, so I’ve got 127 million followers, and it continues to grow very rapidly. That suggests that I’m reasonably popular. Now, I might not be popular with some people, but for the vast majority of people, my follower count speaks for itself,” he said.
At the time of writing this report, Musk’s follower count soared to 127.4 million followers. “I’m the most interacted social media account, I think maybe in the world, certainly on Twitter,” Musk added.
Apart from his general views, announcements about changes on Twitter and replies to people, Musk has been posting about SpaceX and Tesla – the other two companies he leads.
“I think Twitter’s actually an incredibly powerful tool for driving demand for Tesla. And I would really encourage companies out there of all kinds, automotive or otherwise, to make more use of Twitter and to use their Twitter accounts in ways that are interesting, informative, entertaining,” Musk noted.
