How Google Chrome may drain less battery in laptops – Times of India

Google Chrome is the most popular internet browser used worldwide, however, in many cases, it has been criticised for draining the battery life of your laptops. According to a report by 9to5Google, a new tweak has been discovered in the Chrome OS 105 update which was first spotted by About Chromebooks that is expected to improve the battery efficiency while using the browser. The report suggests that Google Chrome’s latest update adds some “behind-the-scenes changes,” which include a new flag, “that shows a potential source of battery savings from the browser. ” The new flag is named “quick intensive throttling,” which is a feature designed to stop background pages from draining excessive battery life.
Google Chrome’s new feature: Availability
As per the report, the new change will apply to all platforms that offer Google Chrome including — Windows, macOS, and Linux. Moreover, the report also mentions that currently, the latest change is appearing only in the Dev channel, so it might be a while before it is made available to everyone in the Stable channel.
Google Chrome’s new feature: How does it work
Google Chrome’s new feature “quick intensive throttling” claims to stop background pages from loading JavaScript elements after 10 seconds which has gone down from the previous limit of five minutes. The tech giant further explained that this new feature is expected to extend the battery life of your devices. Google claims that “an experiment on the Canary and Dev channels did not reveal any regression to our guiding metrics,” and has also seen nearly a 10% improvement in CPU time “when all tabs are hidden and silent.”
However, it is important to note that this feature will work only under the right circumstances and will only apply when multiple tabs are open simultaneously. Apart from this, the report also suggests that if a page is opened up in a new tab, but not immediately interacted with, this change will check that tab from fully loading and eventually draining the battery of your device. Moreover, the new change will apply only when that particular page you’re visiting depends heavily on JavaScript.
