NEW DELHI: : The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal headed by former Delhi HC chief Justice D N Patel has validated the Centre’s decision to ban Islamic Research Foundation, headed by fugitive Zakir Naik, as an unlawful association for a further period of five years till November 14, 2026, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra.
The tribunal said, “There are sufficient reasons and causes for declaring the IRF an unlawful association and consequently, this Tribunal confirms the Notification dated November 15, 2021, issued by the Government of India for the imposition of ban on IRF for a period of five years.” After hearing counsel for IRF, the tribunal was of the view that IRF, despite being banned since 2016, continued to incite and encourage the youth to undertake unlawful activities with an intent to threaten the sovereignty, unity, integrity and security of India and spread communal disaffection.
