The last 2 Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib arrived in Delhi from Kabul on January 18. A non-scheduled Kam Air flight was arranged by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee of Amritsar. 3 members of the Afghan-Sikh community arrived with the last 2 Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. “Three people have arrived from Kabul with the last 2 Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It will be taken to a Gurdwara now. It was due to efforts from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and the Central government that Saroops were brought back,” said a member. The Saroop, or Bir in Punjabi, is a physical representation of the Guru Granth Sahib. Each Saroop contains 1,430 pages, each of which is referred to as an Ang. Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh guru, gathered and placed the first Bir (physical copy) of the Guru Granth Sahib in Amritsar’s Golden Temple in 1604. Following him, the tenth Sikh leader, Guru Gobind Singh, wrote more verses and compiled the Bir for the second and last time. Sikhs see Guru Granth Sahib’s Saroop as the living guru and hold it in the greatest regard. Initially, there were 13 Saroops in Afghanistan, eleven of which had previously been transferred to India. Two additional Saroops have been transferred to India, no Saroop is now left in Afghanistan
