HYDERABAD: Doubles specialist Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who tested positive for Covid-19 about two weeks back, returned negative on Monday.
“He took the rapid test today and thankfully the result was negative. It’s a big relief for all of us,” Satwik’s father Kasi Viswanath told TOI. However, on Monday only the rapid test was done and the RT-PCR test will be done after a couple of days.
Despite winning the Arjuna Award, Satwik had to miss the National Sports Awards function as he contracted the virus.
Meanwhile, the national preparatory camp for the Thomas and Uber Cup probables did not start as per schedule on Monday due to some confusion over the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set up by the Sports Authority of India.
Twenty-six players, seven coaches, four support staff, and three sparring partners are expected to attend the camp to be held at the Gopichand Academy from September 7 to 27. However, TOI has learned that the local players, who wanted to join the camp, were sent back due to some confusion regarding the isolation period. SAI’s guidelines say that players have to be under 10-day isolation and after two Covid-19 tests they would be allowed to practice.
However, if that norm is followed then all the players have to wait until September 17. The Indian team selection is scheduled for September 17 as BAI has to submit the team list to Badminton World Federation (BWF) by September 18.
Meanwhile, only a few players have arrived and are put up at the academy. Sanjana Santosh, Poorvisha Ram, Subhankar Dey, MR Arjun and Aakarshi Kashyap are among those who arrived on Monday.
