Shahrukh Saifi ‘highly radicalised’, NIA to take over probe into Kerala train arson | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency will take over the probe into the Kerala train arson case “soon”, sources told TOI on Monday. This comes close on the heels of Kerala police, which has been probing the case, invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against accused Shahrukh Saifi.
Sources said that the NIA will investigate the larger conspiracy as part of which Saifi, assessed by Kerala police to be “highly radicalised” and influenced by inflammatory speeches of Islamic evangelist Zakir Naik, planned and executed the act of arson. It will also look at possible handlers and aides that may have been part of this conspiracy and examine the inter-state linkages, considering that Saifi is a resident of Shaheen Bagh in Delhi and was arrested from Ratnagari, Maharashtra.

The NIA has informally been involved in the train arson case right from the start, with officers from its Kochi branch having reached the incident site soon after the attack to examine the cause of the fire and collect samples for forensic analysis. On April 2, Saifi had attempted to set some passengers on fire on board the Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express at Elathur in Kozhikode, after spraying them with an inflammable liquid. Three passengers lost their lives while trying to jump out of the train to escape the fire. Saifi was later arrested from Ratnagiri.

The SIT of Kerala police on Sunday invoked Section 16 of UAPA against Saifi. Additional DGP of Kerala M R Ajith Kumar said Saifi used to regularly watch videos of Naik’s speeches and had come to Kerala with determination to commit crime. “ The probe is still continuing to ascertain whether he got any local support for the crime,” he said.
