Sony’s next big bet could be cloud gaming – Times of India

Over the last few years, studios, developers, and makers all have been gushing over cloud gaming and how it is the next big thing, though some lost the race even before it could begin. Despite Stadia’s lousy fortune, everyone wants in on cloud gaming. Xbox is all in, and Netflix is betting big, so why should Sony leave out? And that is why the PlayStation maker has just opened a dozen new positions, looking for people to work in cloud gaming.
In spite of the reported layoffs, Sony is hiring 22 roles for its cloud gaming tech, in which one person’s job will be to “develop and deliver strategic vision for cloud game streaming at PlayStation.”
“As a member of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Future Technology Group (FTG), you’ll have the opportunity to lead the charge in the cloud gaming revolution. FTG is at the forefront of putting console-quality video games on any device,” reads the job listing.
Sony is hiring for a Director of Product Management for Cloud Gaming. Then, there are listings for five senior platform engineers, three software engineers, two technical project managers, and one technical writer. Further, the company is looking for four reliability engineers, a DevOps engineer, and a manager, a senior business intelligence analyst, a security architect, and a network capacity planner. These positions will be under the supervision of the company’s Future Technology Group.
Sony has been trying to patent a lot of technology related to cloud gaming — including one that would allow a single GPU to be shared among multiple applications, which could make cloud gaming more economical. The studio is also working on tackling the connectivity woes of cloud gaming, enabling people to pause and resume games in the cloud, transferring them between devices, and streaming them to a web browser.
Sony is not new to cloud gaming. The PlayStation maker already has a cloud gaming service, PSNow, which lets users stream PlayStation games on any device. But, it is not as close to what these companies have been promising.
Even though nothing suggests that Sony’s cloud gaming service is to come now, the hiring and the number of patents the company has implies that it is onto building something. And there were also rumours of Sony working on a handheld PSP-like console to stream games, but it could be more than that, so all of this could be connected.
