Wrestler Sushil Kumar has denied his involvement in the murder case.
NEW DELHI: Wrestler Sushil Kumar was arrested by Delhi Police from Mundka early on Sunday in connection with the murder of former international wrestler Sagar Dhankar inside Chhatrasal Stadium in North- West Delhi.
He was on the run for over a fortnight.
Kumar’s associate has been arrested as well.
Police have found that the fight took place over a flat owned by Kumar in Model Town in which the deceased wrestler had previously been living.
This has been corroborated in a video shot during the brawl in which Kumar is seen assaulting Dhankad.
According to the police, the deceased wrestler, 23-year-old Sagar Dhankad, used to earlier live in the flat in Model Town which is owned by Kumar.
The two wrestlers had an ongoing dispute over the rent of the flat which snowballed into a fatal brawl after Dhankad abused Kumar.
During their probe, police have found that Kumar and his associates, Ajay, Prince and others, who were named in the FIR, based on the statement given by Sonu, are absconding and all of their mobile phones are switched off.
Multiple teams of Delhi police had been raiding their possible hideouts in Delhi, UP, Punjab and Haryana to arrest them.
Police are probing the possibility of involvement of gangsters Kala Jathedi Larence Bishnoi gang and Neeraj Bawania behind the fight as preliminary findings have suggested that Kumar and associates had links with gangsters
On the intervening night of May 4 and 5, Dhankad was beaten to death inside Chhatrasal Stadium allegedly by Kumar and his associates.
Kumar has denied his involvement in the matter.
“They weren’t our wrestlers, it happened late last night. We have informed police officials that some unknown people jump into our premises and fought. No connection of our stadium with this incident,” he had told a news agency.
That night police had also seized four vehicles from outside the stadium.
A double-barrel gun was recovered from one of the cars.
A day later, following raids, the police had also arrested 24-year-old Prince Dalal, a resident of Jhajjar, Haryana. A double-barrel gun was recovered from him.
Sagar Dhankad was the son of a Delhi Police head constable.
