Bluesky began in 2019 as a social media standard backed by Twitter, aiming to decentralise social media platforms. But, in 2021, it separated from Twitter, and since then, it has emerged as a Twitter alternative, like Mastodon, which gained popularity after Musk‘s acquisition of Twitter.
The cornerstone of Bluesky is the Authenticated Transfer (AT) Protocol, designed to facilitate “large-scale distributed social applications.” Key pillars of this protocol include account portability, algorithmic choice, interoperation, and performance, to support a decentralised social media ecosystem.
The Bluesky app offers functionalities similar to Twitter, including user search, following other users, and creating posts with photos. However, some features, like direct messages, are not yet available. And it also has considerably fewer users, at around 25,000.
The Bluesky app, designed to serve as a reference client, features a simple interface with four primary tabs:
Home: The default feed is “Following,” and “What’s hot” provides helpful suggestions for new users. There is Search, which allows users to search for content or other users, and
Notifications display notifications for the user. You can find the account settings under the Account page. Additionally, a navigation drawer can be accessed by tapping the profile picture in the top-left corner. This drawer provides options for settings, theme customisation (similar to Twitter’s UI), and feedback submission.
Users can gain invites by spending some time on the app. So, for an invite, you will need to find someone who uses the app or join the waitlist.
According to CEO Jay Graber‘s recent statement, Bluesky aims to create an open marketplace of algorithms that will empower developers to experiment with and publish algorithms that anyone can use. This approach is intended to allow users to customise their feed and regain control over their most precious resource: attention.
In a recent blog post, Graber emphasised that moderation is one of the final aspects that need to be addressed before Bluesky becomes accessible to the public.
