Twitter shows J&K as separate country, drops map amid row | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Twitter was caught in another controversy in India as it created a near political furore by showing Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as a separate country.
The move comes at a time when PM Narendra Modi has started engagements with political parties in J&K nearly two years after the bifurcation of J&K into Union territories and the revocation of its special status under Article 370.
No sooner than the error was noticed around 2pm than it created an uproar, and saw the company – which has been embroiled in a series of disputes with the Indian government in recent months – quietly withdraw the map by the close of the day. The error had appeared on the career section of Twitter’s website under the header ‘Tweep Life’.
This is the third time in the past few months when the company has displayed a wrong map of India on its platform. In October last year, it had shown Leh as part of China, which had seen furious reactions from IT and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad before the error was corrected. India had also issued a stern warning to Twitter. But in November 2020, Twitter was again served a notice by the government for showing Leh as part of J&K, instead of the UT of Ladakh.
It is expected that the IT ministry may issue a showcause notice to the company for the fresh transgression, and may also recommend action. On its part, Twitter officials did not answer queries on the matter.
