Now, it appears WhatsApp is gearing up to make it big entry into the Indian UPI space as the app has been spotted testing the feature.
WABetaInfo, the website that tracks the changes and upcoming features on the Facebook-owned app, has spotted a new section to introduce UPI Payments that is soon expected to be rolled out.
“Send and receive money securely, right where you chat” reads the screenshot. After this, users should be asked to link their bank accounts to their WhatsApp accounts and they should be ready to make and take transfers.
Even though WhatsApp doesn’t officially offer UPI support right now, WhatsApp users in India can make use of this feature through a payment request. This works like an invite-based system so if you want to enable this feature right now, you can do it by finding someone who already has it enabled for them.
The WhatsApp Payment services was launched India as a beta in 2018 with a restriction off 1 million users, however, last year with the regulatory approval of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2020, WhatsApp was allowed to launch its Unified Payments Interface or UPI gateway in a “graded” manner.
