“The timeline is being extended to facilitate and provide ample opportunity to the pensioners / members so as to to ease out any difficulty being faced by them. This has been decided after sympathetically considering the various demands received from employees, employers and their associations,” a statement by the labour ministry said.
TOI has been highlighting the technical and operational difficulties applicants have faced while applying for the higher pension scheme. Some of the procedural complexities highlighted by TOI – such as the pension fund’s mandatory prerequisite to submit prior permission from EPFO to contribute to the provident fund on one’s actual basic salary – have since been struck down by Kerala HC.
Courts have also dismissed EPFO’s argument that employees of exempted trusts should not be eligible to opt for higher pension.
EPFO said it has received over 12 lakh applications until May 2. “Many representations have been received from various quarters seeking extension of time. The issue has been considered and it has been decided that in order to provide a larger window of opportunity and in order to enable all eligible persons to file their applications, the timeline for filing applications would now be till 26 June, 2023,” the pension fund manager said.
The extension in deadline for application not only gives additional time to subscribers to synchronise their service history records, PF and pension account details, but also gives the fund manager time to fix technical and operational issues faced by subscribers while applying through the online portal. Most importantly, the extended deadline gives EPFO time to clear the air on crucial aspects of the scheme like the method of deposit, formula for computation of pension, interest applicable from 2014 until now, and the replacement mechanism for 1.16% EPS contribution by employees that was struck down by the SC in its November 4, 2022 judgment.
At the Central Board of Trustees’ meeting last month, EPFO had also promised to set up help centres to assist people, especially retired persons who are not tech-savvy, in filing their submissions. Such centres are expected to be opened now.
