YouTube Ambient mode: What is it, how it works and more – Times of India

YouTube on the app and desktop offers a host of features and options to improve the viewing experience. One of these features is the Ambient mode which makes the viewing experience more immersive for users. Wondering what is YouTube Ambient mode, how it works and how to use it? Here’s our complete guide on it:
What is YouTube Ambient mode?
In ambient mode, the definition is hidden in the name itself. The Ambient mode amplifies YouTube’s interface with respect to the video you are watching. When the feature is turned on, it takes the colours from the video footage and expands it throughout the user interface in the form of soft gradient texture as the colours are leaking from the video player. The feature is available on Android, iOS and desktop.
YouTube Ambient mode: How it works
YouTube Ambient mode is supposed to be turned on manually and once it is on, there’s nothing else that needs to be done except play a video on YouTube. Also, the Ambient mode is dynamic which means, it automatically adapts to the colour of the video being played to offer a more immersive experience. The only thing you need to note is that it only works with Dark mode.
How to enable Ambient mode on YouTube
As mentioned, the feature works only with dark mode. So, first things first — enable dark mode on the YouTube desktop and app. For this follow these steps:
On desktop: Click on Avatar icon → Appearance → Choose Dark theme
On Android: Tap on Avatar icon → Settings → General → Appearance → Dark theme
On iOS: Tap on Avatar icon → Settings → General → Appearance → Dark theme
Once you’ve enabled the Dark theme on YouTube, follow the steps below to enable Ambient mode
Open YouTube on desktop or the app on a smartphone and start playing any video
Now, tap on the ‘gear’ icon from the YouTube player
Choose Ambient mode and tap on it to turn it On or Off
Once enabled, you’ll see a soft gradient texture appearing around the video players. This is when you know that the Ambient mode is enabled and working.
