For CUET-UG, a candidate can appear in a maximum of 10 subjects and apply in multiple programmes and institutions. The test is scheduled for May 21-31 and it will be conducted in three shifts this year.
As per the application trend, apart from the General Test which received the highest over eight lakh applications, both chemistry and physics with over 6.3 lakh and 6.5 lakh applications respectively are the top choices among domain specific subjects, followed by mathematics (4.8 lakh) and biology (4 lakh). In social sciences/ humanities, both political science and economics received over two lakh applications, while over 1.8 lakh applied for history. In the commerce stream, business studies (2 lakh plus) received the highest number of applications.
After DU and BHU, the other top three universities in terms of number of applications are Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (4.1 lakh), University of Allahabad (3.1 lakh) and Jamia Millia Islamia (2.6 lakh).
CUET-UG remains the second largest entrance exam in the country in terms of number of applicants. A total of 13.9 lakh candidates completed the application process by March 30, the last date, as compared with 12.5 registrations in 2022 of which 9.9 lakh submitted their applications. Of the 13.9 lakh aspirants, 6.5 lakh are women.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) for admission to medical colleges remains the largest entrance test in India and saw over 18 lakh registrations last year.
This year, students from 74 countries across Europe, Asia, America and Gulf have registered as compared with 59 in 2022.
Apart from the increased number of candidates, the bigger challenge for UGC this year is to deliver a glitch-free test. The first edition reported major technical glitches, resulting in multiple postponements and last minute rescheduling which affected many aspirants.
CUET-UG 2023 has 33 language subjects, of which English received the highest applications (9.7 lakh), followed by Hindi (2.6 lakh) and Urdu (12,800).
The test will be conducted in 13 languages- English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
