Apple seems to be planning another radical change for its devices. The company seems to be planning to do away with physical buttons. As per a story in Phonearena, Apple is working on a display technology that aims to remove physical buttons on its devices. The company reportedly wants to replace physical buttons with invisible input areas.
How is Apple planning to replace physical buttons?
As per the report, Apple is planning to create dedicated surfaces on products that will be undetectable under normal circumstances to replace the physical buttons. These undetectable surfaces will include micro-perforations that will allow light to pass through them.
How will these undetectable surfaces work?
The report suggests that these surfaces will be made visible to the users whenever physical input is needed. These surfaces will light up (which are otherwise invisible) and act as an input area when needed. To make this work, the technology (in the new patent) will include sensors. These sensors will allow these surfaces to work like physical buttons as they will be able to register touch or pressure and will even respond to them.
These sensors will be disabled and the entire surface will seamlessly fade away into the device, once they are not in use. The company has explained the rationale behind the design by mentioning that the physical input mechanisms lack “flexibility or adaptability” and sits idly when not in use.
Does this new input surface technology have a future?
This new tech can be used for dedicated notification buttons that will show relevant information or can be used to include temporary sliders on bezels (like MacBook’s Touch Bar) and may even pave the way for an all-glass iPhone design.
However, for now, there appears to be some disadvantages in the technology as it works only with a limited number of materials including — glass, ceramic and plastic.
