Apple may just be forced to add USB Type-C port to iPhones – Times of India

When it comes to the choice of connectivity ports, Apple always had complex justifications. While it was quick to adopt USB Type-C for MacBooks, it has no intention in ditching the old Lightning port and replacing it with USB Type-C. But, now Apple may just be forced to put a USB Type-C port in its iPhones. The European Union has been battling for a common charging port and charger for all smartphones for quite some time now.
The battle over different kinds of chargers is over for Android mobile phone users as all devices come with a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. But iPhone users are still stuck with a separate charger and the EU feels it’s high time that this should change.
The EU feels that by making common chargers for all smartphones, mobile brands will help reduce generation of electronic waste. On the other hand, Apple believes that suddenly discontinuing the Lightning port on iPhones will create more electronic waste considering there are a lot of iPhone chargers out there globally.
However, as per a report by Yahoo! Finance, the EU is planning to propose the common charger legislation in September. If the EU is successful in passing this law then Apple will have to adopt the USB Type-C port for iPhones that are sold in Europe. Now, it is highly unlikely that Apple will have different charging ports for iPhones in the European market and the rest of the world.
For those unaware, Apple recently stopped providing charging adapters and earphones inside the boxes of the new iPhones in order to reduce electronic waste. But in France, Apple is forced to provide earphones for free inside the box as the local law mandates it. In France, no mobile brand can sell smartphones without earphones by law that is said to help people with hearing defects.
