BAFTAs 2023: Indian fans slam British award show for ‘RRR’ snub; say ‘It’s a shame it didn’t get any nominations’ – Times of India

The German epic film ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ dominated the BAFTA Awards, with a record-breaking seven wins, including for Best Director, Best Film and Best Film Not in the English Language.
Based on the 1928 novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque about the horrors of World War One from the perspective of a young German soldier, the Netflix drama had led nominations, with 14 nods. While it was expected to do well at the awards show, no one could predict the 7 wins topped by Best Picture.

The film that is also a front-runner at the Oscars, won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Not In The English Language, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Cinematography. It also took home the trophy for Best Sound and Best Original Score, something that M.M.Keeravaani’s ‘Natu Natu’ from SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR‘ has been dominating at other award shows thus far.

At a time when the Indian film has been winning praise from almost all Hollywood filmmakers and actors, ‘RRR’ was snubbed at the BAFTAs and did not pick up any nominations, let alone stand a chance at winning big. Angry Indian fans took to Twitter to slam the awards show for the snub and said, “It’s a shame that it didn’t get any nominations or awards. BAFTA wasn’t ready for this masterpiece.”

Another tweeted, “Well BAFTA didn’t have the courage to even get RRR in any categories. Is the reasoning that RRR shows British ancestors in a bad light? Are u telling the world that there is no elevated artistry in anything that even remotely points out that your past is built on oppression?”

Still another drew comparison to the success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and said, “ngl i did expect rrr to clinch a bafta nom after slumdog millionaire and parasite’s sweeps in the past.”

‘RRR’ failing to score a nomination was not the only shocker. The dimension-hopping ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ that was tipped to win big at the upcoming Oscars, turned into the night’s biggest loser with just a win for Best Editing.

Meanwhile, World War 1 epic now holds the record for the most BAFTA wins for a film not in the English language. The previous record was held by 1988 film ‘Cinema Paradiso’, which won five BAFTAs.

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ has now reportedly secured its win at the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category and could even surprise by taking home the Best Film trophy.
