The circular sent by the board to schools said that for Classes IX and Class X board exams, competency-based questions would be a minimum of 30%. Earlier objective-type questions comprised 20% of a test paper. This is to promote higher skills in students to face up to the challenges of the 21st century, the board said in a circular to all schools.
The competency-based questions could be in the form of multiple-choice, case-based, and source-based integrated questions. Like the existing pattern, multiple-choice-based questions will be around 20% of the test paper. However, long and short answers will comprise 50% of the test paper, against the existing 60%.
The circular issued by the board, said, “The National Education Policy 2020 has affirmed the need to move from rote to competency-based learning, making it more focused on developing the creative and critical thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century proactively. It emphasizes that learners must be equipped with the ability to solve problems and assessment must shift from testing primarily rote memorization skills to one that is more formative, is more competency-based, promotes learning and development for our students, and tests higher-order skills, such as analysis, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity. Augmenting the thrust towards CBE, the board is initiating further corresponding changes in the Examination and Assessment practices for the (academic) year 2021-22.”
