Santosh Mahadev Sawant alias Abu Sawant, financier of gangster Chhota Rajan was remanded to judicial custody till May 2 by a special CBI court on Wednesday. He was absconding from 2005 and was arrested at the airport when he landed from Singapore. CBI’s extradition request was also pending. A Red Corner Notice was issued against him in 2012. Sawant’s lawyer, Prakash Shetty told TOI that he was not extradited but he returned of his own volition. “On behalf of Sawant we moved an application before the special court on April 15 stating that he has been falsely implicated in the case and as he is a law abiding citizen he wants to make himself available for investigation and trial. So he has surrendered before the agency,” said Shetty. Sawant was accused of extortion in 2005.
