Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre after hearing a PIL filed by lawyer Reepak Kansal, seeking equal protection for transgender community against sexual offences. A bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde, termed the plea as ‘a very good issue’. The petition filed by lawyer Reepak Kansal sought a direction to the Union of India to make appropriate modification/ interpretation of sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) dealing with sexual assaults against transgender/ transsexuals and/or eunuchs.
