Did ‘Brahmastra’ cause Rs 800 crore loss to theatre chains? PVR CEO Kamal Gianchandani reacts – Times of India

After reports claimed Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt‘s film ‘Brahmastra’ caused multi-crore loss to theatre chain PVR, CEO Kamal Gianchandani took to Twitter to set the record straight. In a series of tweets, Kamal slammed media reports that claimed that the multiplex giant suffered a multi-crore loss after Brahmastra received mixed reviews.

A report in Business Insider stated that negative reviews of Ayan Mukerji’s film led to India’s largest theater chains PVR and Inox cumulatively suffering over Rs 800 crore loss in market capitalisation on September 9. Earlier today, Kamal dismissed the report as “false” and “negative”.

“It amazes me, the false and negative info about @BrahmastraFilm on the internet and in the media. Is it a lack of understanding or is it intentionally designed to cast doubts? Just so that we don’t miss crucial FACTS, I can now confirm that @_PVRCinemas did 8.18 cr Net BO for #Bramhastra on day 1,” he wrote.

Gianchandani further shared day 1 nett collections of recent blockbusters including ‘KGF 2’, ‘RRR’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘Sooryavanshi’ at PVR theatres. He also stated that ‘Brahmastra’ has been doing exceptionally well in the PVR theatres and the audience seems to be enjoying the film. “the simple take-away is that the paying audiences are enjoying the film and spreading a positive word about it. #PVR is having a fabulous weekend which is so encouraging given the massive lineup of films over the next 3 months!” he concluded the thread.

When ETimes reached out to Kamal Gianchandani, he refused to comment.

Yesterday, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri had to reacted reports that claimed the theatre chains suffered losses and called Bollywood as ‘fake’. “Problem is everything runs on fakeness in Bollywood. And nobody is answerable. No industry can survive which invests 0% in R&D and wastes 70-80% money on stars,” he had tweeted.

Meanwhile, ‘Brahmastra’ has had a fantastic opening day at the box office. The film amassed around Rs 36 crore nett all over India on Day 1. The collections were extraordinary in the metros. This is the highest opening day collection in the history of a non-holiday release for original Hindi content.
