The festivities will be at an all-time low during this year’s Durga Puja. But there are some who have decided to dedicate this year to the country’s migrant labourers. The country saw a nationwide lockdown from March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Millions of migrants were caught unaware. People lost jobs, livelihoods as they headed back home on foot in harsh conditions. Kolkata’s Barisha Club Durga Puja committee is paying tribute to migrants in its unique style. They have installed a statue of a migrant mother in place of Goddess Durga. The migrant mother has three children around her. Two girls are on her side which signifies Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati. The young boy in the mother’s arms signifies the God Kartik. These pictures have gone viral on social media. Most social media users have appreciated the gesture. It is a theme that touches the emotional chord of all Indians. Migrants leave home, work across the country and are the engine of our economic growth. A tribute to the never-say-die attitude of our migrants.
