Months after the Cupertino-giant introduced the new emergency feature on iPhone, US-based chip maker Qualcomm Inc has recently announced its plans to offer satellite-based messaging features on flagship smartphones that run Google‘s Android operating system. The chipmaker has formed a new partnership with Iridium Communications Inc to bring satellite connectivity to Android phones. According to a report by Reuters, this feature will enable Android devices powered by Qualcomm chipsets to communicate through satellites when there is no Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
Snapdragon Satellite: What is it
Qualcomm’s new satellite messaging service will be known as Snapdragon Satellite. This feature will be available in select markets starting in the second half of 2023. Initially, this service will be available for devices that feature the second generation of the Snapdragon 8 mobile platform.
The chip maker has also confirmed that users can enable Snapdragon Satellite on other devices including laptops, vehicles and tablets, the report adds. However, the company didn’t confirm if these devices will need any special equipment to access the service.
Snapdragon Satellite: How will it work
Messages that will be sent through this service using Qualcomm’s technology will first reach Iridium’s satellite network. Hereafter, these messages will then be sent to the recipient or emergency services. Qualcomm has also confirmed that smartwatch maker Garmin will also coordinate emergency response services for users accessing the satellite service.
Smartphones powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors
Qualcomm unveiled the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform a few months ago. Several brands have either already launched new smartphones with this flagship chipset or have confirmed to unveil products with the same.
Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has confirmed that its next premium device — the OnePlus 11 will come powered by the latest chipset. Apart from this, Vivo’s sub-brand iQoo is also set to launch its flagship device — the iQoo 11 smartphone in India on January 10. This handset will also feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.
More brands will soon adopt the Qualcomm chipset for their flagship smartphones. This will help the company to offer the Snapdragon Satellite features across multiple brands and Android users will soon be able to use the feature that is currently exclusive to iPhone 14 users.
